Study Skills and Strategies (3S) Online

3S is a comprehensive interactive online study skills program, developed by Study Skills Plus, a division of Mangrum-Strichart Learning Resources. It is appropriate for students in high school through college. The program requires only that the user have access to the Internet.

Here are the five areas of study skills and strategies covered in 3S:

3S has three major components:

Component A - Assessment. Students take the assessment to evaluate their instructional needs in the study skills and strategies taught in the program.
Component B - Instruction. Students work through the interactive instruction to gain mastery of the study skills and strategies covered in the program.
Component C - Management. Faculty and staff use the management system to monitor the progress of individual students, groups of students, and classes.

Component A - Assessment

The 3S assessment contains 70 items that require students to indicate their use of the study skills and strategies that are taught in the program. Click on the image of the Assessment Screen on the right.

A Narrative Report is automatically generated when a student completes an assessment. The report describes each of the study skills and strategies units. For each unit, the student's score is reported along with one of three instructional recommendations: need instruction, need review, need no instruction. A hyperlink to instruction is provided for any unit for which the student needs review or instruction. A student may take the assessment any number of times. This allows faculty and staff to evaluate and monitor the student's progress and needs. The Narrative Report for each completed assessment is stored and can be retrieved and printed at any time. Click on the image of the Narrative Report on the right.

Component B - Instruction

Each of the five units of instruction includes multiple interactive screens. The following learning model is used. First, the student is introduced to the strategy or skill. Second, the student is shown examples of how the strategy or skill is used. Third, the student practices the use of the strategy or skill. During this practice, the student is required to type responses in text fields that are provided. Pop-up screens provide feedback throughout the practice activities. Each sequence of instruction concludes with an application activity in which the student is required to apply the skill or strategy to his or her actual class work. Click on the image of the Instruction Screen on the right.

Component C - Management

Each assessment and application activity completed by a student is automatically stored in a central file. Designated faculty and staff can easily retrieve and print assessment reports and completed application activities for individual students or for classes or groups they establish. Faculty and staff can type comments on application activities and send the work and comments back to the student. The student can make changes and resubmit their work. This back and forth communication can be continued indefinitely.

The Management Component also provides a Diagnostic Profile for each assessment completed by a student. The profile contains a bar graph of the student's scores along with instructional recommendations. It allows faculty and staff to quickly identify the student's instructional needs at a glance. The Diagnostic Profile for each completed assessment is stored and can be retrieved and printed at any time. Click on the image of the Diagnostic Profile below.

If faculty and staff do not wish to use the management component, they can have students email assessment reports and application activities to them directly from the site. Or, they can have students print these and submit them in class.
